SPRING EQUINOX 2008

Happy Spring!

All things being equal... Today light and dark are perfectly balanced. If you were to compare the sun's yearly cycle to the moon's monthly cycle, as astrologer Mark Lerner does, today would be the "2nd quarter" of the sun. (New at the Winter solstice, "full" at the summer solstice, and "dark" after the Autumn Equinox.)

I will talk more about the different calendars and ways of understanding the sun cycle later in this post. First let me talk about the spiritual and magickal aspects of today.

Even if you are not a witch, or do not practice any religion or follow a spiritual path, the energy of the Equinox is available to you. Today is the day to look at your life like a field. There are probably some big rocks and weeds that you need to clear away, maybe (like me) this is the main thing you are doing right now-- trying to clean up old karma.

But no matter what obstacles there are, today is the day to look at the field and to find the places where seeds can be planted. (Seed spells are excellent for a witch's Equinox Rite. ) Simply spending some time outside in the sun, in a park or garden is especially good, and meditating on what you want to grow is an excellent way to tap into the energy.

This is also a good day to really connect with the Earth and the spirits of Nature. We move so fast, and we are so busy and distracted. Nature never rushes. She is never busy or distracted. Take a moment to really appreciate the simplest things. The cheerful birds, the tenascious weeds that will grow even in the cracks of hostile concrete, and the tireless winds.

And the Earth is the source of all our abundance. There is not one thing that does not come from her. Our spirits may come from the "other side" but we would have no life without these shells made from minerals, and sustained by air and water and food. Even cell phones, video games, televisions, come from the Earth. So really take a moment to appreciate that. That is the most powerful magick you can do today.

About the different calendars: In each person's life there is always more than one cycle going at once. You might be near the end of your physical life, in your seventies, but maybe your spiritual life is just beginning. Or perhaps you have acquired your Ph.D., and are very mature mentally, but you just fell in love for the first time, and you are just a wee babe emotionally.

So it is with the cycles of the year. The sun, as I explained above, is born in darkness at the Winter Solstice. Astrologically, the sun entering Aries is the beginning of a new cycle through the houses of the Zodiac. Then there are the tides of the year: Sowing (now), Reaping (after the Summer Solstice), Resting(after the Autumn Equinox), Destruction (after the Winter Solstice).

Then there is the witch's and magickal calendar, following the cycle the Druids discovered: Samhain, the ancestor of Halloween, is the death of the old year, and the birth of the new. Born in darkness and allowed to rest until the Winter Solstice. This is the waning half of the year, when the cattle could not be taken out to graze. Bealtaine, the ancestor of May Day, was the waxing half of the year, the birth of new life. Both Samhain and Bealtaine are also the times of year when the veil between the worlds is lifted.

I will probably not post seperately on tomorrow's full moon. Even though the moon is full tomorrow morning, I suggest doing your ritual tomorrow night, when the moon is in Libra. There is a grand cross with this full moon-- two oppositions. The sun-moon opposition that is the monthly full moon, and another Mars-Pluto opposition. Basically, as I see it, problems between men and women, work and home, the inner and outer life. All problems, in essence, are just opportunities for change and improvement. And this series of Mars-Pluto oppositions is kicking everyone's ass.

If it isn't working it is going to collapse. Let it. But say a prayer. Alot of people are getting crushed by the falling debris.
