The actual date of Bealtaine, "May Day", is on the 6th of May. However, the ancient Celts, from whom we inherit the name of the day, celebrated the beginning of a new day at sunset. All things begin in darkness. So this year May Eve falls on both Cinco de Mayo and Buddha's birthday. The sun will reach 15 degrees Taurus on May 6th.
I expect most pagans are celebrating tonight, however. "Hey hey it's the Eve of May/ Outdoor fucking begins today" is the current slogan.
Bealtaine is the twin of Samhain, the origins of our secular Halloween. At Samhain the veil between the worlds is thinnest. The dead come back to roam the earth and feast with the living.
At Bealtaine the veil between the worlds is thinner than at any other time except Samhain, but it is the new spirits coming into the world that are celebrated. Fertility, new life, new beginnings. Trial marriages for a year and a day were usually begun at May Eve.
Tonight is a good night to engage in creative acts. Light a candle if you can't light a bonfire. Stand outside in your bare feet as sunset approaches and let your heart be filled with love for the earth and all of her creatures. Even mosquitos. If you are a witch and you are planning to celebrate on the night of the fifth use tonight to meditate and prepare. What old business needs to be finished up? Use the work week to prepare the ground, and decide what seeds you want to plant for the waxing half of the year. Between now and Halloween, what do you want to accomplish?
Tomorrow from 8:17 AM PDT til 11:35 AM Wednesday is an excellent time to plant real seeds in the ground. The moon is waxing in the sign of Cancer, the most fertile of signs. Come Friday the moon will be in barren Leo. There is no better way to celebrate Bealtaine than to start a garden or plant a tree. Say a prayer for the healing of our planet. Thank the Great Mother for her bounty and how richly she provides for us.
Praises, Thanks, & Blessings!!!
