The new moon in Capricorn is tonight at 7:12 PM PST. Tonight is the night to look back and let go, and then look forward and meditate on what you want from the coming calendar year (and/or make resolutions).
I suggest at least an hour. Take thirty minutes before (about 6:30, if you can manage it) and light a candle (any candle will do, but if you have a black and a white candle I suggest those--black for waning and white for waxing--also for the god and goddess, light and dark, etc.) and do some breathing exercises or meditate to fully calm and center yourself. (You can cast a circle and do a New Moon rite, but you might want to wait until just after the moon is new.) The first part is letting go and releasing and reviewing.
Start by listing all the things you wish you hadn't done or that are weighing you down. Write them all down. Look them over and see if there is any lesson to be learned or anything that you missed. Maybe some of it is old karma that you needed to pay off? Now burn it or shred it and be done with it. That's it. It's over and done with. Spend a maximum of ten minutes doing this. If you missed something and you think of later and it really bothers you scribble it down then throw it away. But really, try to wrap up the year's mistakes in this setting.
Now go through and write down all the things that you are proud of doing, or that were a struggle for you, or that made you really happy. Especially write down the things that you weren't given appreciation for or that you didn't feel you could reveal were a struggle for you. (For instance, keeping the living room clean during the week, or remembering to send family birthday cards on time, or not letting your bank account get overdrawn-- these are some of my examples!)
Now, close your eyes and picture yourself walking on stage at Madison Square Garden. The crowd is screaming and applauding. You bow several times before they calm down enough for you to speak. Now read each item from list and give plenty of time for thunderous applause, bravo's and standing ovations. People begin to throw bouquets of flowers and gifts. Underwear with phone numbers written on the fabric is thrown at you. (In my fantasy I get to crowned with a diamond tiara and Brad Pitt and George Clooney throw their boxers up on stage with their private cell numbers written on the fly.)
Now throw that list away too. Don't hang on to it. No matter how great the accomplishment or the disappointment, let it go. Now it is time to begin again. (If using two candles you could extinguish the black one and light the white one now, or just have both of them lit and continue burning. If you are doing a New Moon Rite then now would be the time to cast your circle, etc.)
Now let's get some images set: your perfect, fufilled, authentic Self. Living the life you want to live, looking the way you want to look, doing work that you want to do, surrounded by the people you want to be near. If you don't know the answers to these questions just try meditating. See what images come.
(A note here about the times we are living in: if you are really psychically sensitive right now you might pick up some negative static and bad spirits when you first start communing with the future. There is a lot of that out there. Simply re-focus on your positive Self image. If you need to, get back on stage and tell the crowd about how wonderful your ideal self is and let them applaud you. Love and appreciation makes the boogie man go bye-bye.)
When you have an image of your ideal self in ideal conditions, begin to poke around. What's there that is in your life now? What's missing? How did this beautiful, serene, confident, wholly integrated and happily fulfilled and successful person get to where s/he is?
For instance, if you want to start your own business, begin by picturing it as if it is already happening and you are where you want to be. How did you get there? (This is from the book WISHCRAFT by Barbara Sher. I highly recommend it.) Learn as much as you can from your vision.
If you get negative messages ("you can't expect to have everything work out perfectly", or "you really think your family will let you do this or that?") write them down to acknowledge them, but move on. Re-centre on your ideal vision. Expectations, good or bad, only hamper the envisioning process. For instance, if you are a writer and you have an idea for a story, you write it down. You might think "well, I don't recall there being any German Catholics in that part of the country during the 1800's" but you wouldn't stop writing down your idea. You'd just write a note to research that later. This is what you are doing. Writing the story for you life. Even if your last story didn't work out or you aren't sure your research is sound, this is the time to write down the idea. Does that help?
I would keep this list for the rest of the year, and I would suggest doing the meditation once per week. Visualizing what you want is powerful mojo. And there is something deeply refreshing about just being who and what you know you can be --even if it's just for a few minutes in a week in your imagination!
Finally, I would end with a prayer for yourself and your loved ones. Here is a good exercise for the chakras and to cleanse all of your energy. Breathing deeply through your nose, imagine a light from Heaven/Universe coming down through the top of your head and into the heart chakra. The heart chakra will begin glowing green with love. Green is the love of the world and God/dess and all non-human things. Imagine the Heavenly light illuminating your heart chakra so that the green goes out from you and covers all of you and your house, then your city, and begins radiating all over the planet. The green from your heart chakra is covering the globe and the atmosphere.
Now see that a light from the earth comes up through your feet and fills your heart chakra as well. You can visualize the green turning pink, or what I do, seeing 6 billion little heart shaped pink butterflies flying through the green and around the world to every single person on the planet. It is very important to send love to all the people on the planet. I usually visualize the people I love receiving it individually. It is as powerful as a prayer. If you are able in this state to imagine the love going to your enemies than do so. It is very powerful healing for you! If you cannot manage that then simply see all of that pink love covering the globe, just as the green did.
Now, with the green and pink flowing out of you, see your gaurdian spirits and angels behind you. Feel their hand on your shoulder and how strong they are and how much the Universe wants you to succeed and thrive and be joyous. Your body of light has wings of light fibers, including angel wings. Feel those opening up fiber by fiber from each vertebrae on your spine. They spread out 6 feet in either direction. Feel their power and energy. Give thanks to all the spirits that protect and guide you, and give thanks to everything that you are and to every moment of your life good or bad. Bless your whole past and future.

Breathe deeply of all the love and blessings you have just created and released into the world and into your future. Feel your wings fold back in slowly. Breathe deeply and feel the earth energy bless and release you, the pink light subsides. Now the Universal energy blesses and releases you, the green energy subsides.
Open your eyes, stand up (I wouldn't do any of this lying down-- it is too easy to fall asleep) and shake your whole body like the hokey pokey to get rid of any excess energy. Extinguish the candles with a snuffer or by covering them (you don't want to blow out candles used in energy or magic!). If you want to make an offering or sing a song of praise or recite poetry that is good idea. When you are done be sure to eat something like a piece of cheese or some nuts and a little fruit. Drink some plain water too. Energy work is hard on your endocrine system and you want to stabilize it.
The moon will be void for most of Saturday, and with the holidays you might want to wait to start your resolutions next week. The Aries moon on Thursday morning is a great time to get started on things, but remember Aries energy burns out quickly. If you want to start a diet or join a gym or begin any kind of program I recommend waiting until next Saturday after 11AM PST. The moon in Taurus in the second quarter is the best astrological aspect for beginning a diet or any program or committment. Things started during Taurus in the second quarter last the longest and grow the most in value.
(If you are quitting smoking or some other habit wait until the waning moon later this month. I will get the dates for you in a later post.)
